The Eight Levels of Healing and Recovery

The Domestic Stranger Healing and Recovery Hierarchy™ is an original eight-level educational model inspired by Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, specifically adapted to the emotional healing, safety, recovery, and empowerment of survivors of family violence.
The Eight Levels of Healing and Recovery
Acknowledgment & Validation — Recognizing the abuse, rejecting self-blame, and affirming the survivor's experience.
Safety & Protection — Establishing physical and emotional safety, freedom from intimidation, and personal autonomy.
Stability & Resources — Securing housing, financial resources, legal assistance, and practical support.
Safe Relationships & Community — Rebuilding supportive connections, healthy boundaries, and belonging.
Health & Well-Being — Accessing trauma-informed counseling, healthcare, and emotional-regulation resources.
Identity & Self-Esteem — Reclaiming confidence, dignity, personal identity, and self-worth.
Peace & Joy — Cultivating emotional stability, hope, meaningful relationships, and fulfillment.
Purpose & Legacy — Pursuing personal aspirations, advocacy if desired, independence, and a meaningful future.
The Foundation: Faith, Truth, and Support
The model incorporates optional Christian spiritual support alongside practical, trauma-informed resources. Psalm 34:18, John 8:32, and Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 offer theological themes of comfort, truth, and community.
Important clinical distinction: This pyramid is an original educational framework, not a clinically validated assessment or treatment model. Survivors do not have to progress through the levels in order. Safety, practical needs, relationships, and emotional recovery often develop simultaneously, and faith or public advocacy should never be imposed as conditions of healing.
